It was a war I was ill prepared for, with my allies coming in a scattered trickle and my own forces in disarray, beaten by generals and forces that took far better advantage of the terrain and positioning then I did. I personally didn't think there was a way for me to pull back the conflict, the enemy was far too entrenched with large stacks of forces that were poised to conquer holdings and gain vast war score for it.

Sometimes in war it's better to know when you're beaten and focus on other things instead. For me, that other thing is strengthening my own personal holdings so that I can better deal with the inevitable loss of the emperor title from the hands of the Maelor dynasty. I definitely could have fought the war better but perhaps in failure things will become more interesting and I could do with losing a few vassals anyway; it means I have a larger percentage of the military force of the empire under my personal control.
