Let's Play Crystal Caves HD #04: Tricky Traps
This is my first playthrough through this game. Kindly avoid posting spoilers in the comments or solutions to puzzles either in this video or future ones so as not to spoil the experience for me or those that haven’t seen the game before.
Each level appears to be contained within the same amount of space meaning that's there's only so much that can be thrown at you at any one time. Don't take this limitation as a sign that things are going to be easy, however; there's a LOT that a crafty level designer can do with only a fraction of what's available here and one of the super sneaky things they can do is create ways the player can prevent themselves from completing the level.
Unlike the Commander Keen games, you have to collect every single crystal to leave the levels and some of them need to be grabbed in a certain order, lest you lock yourself out from getting the others. Then there's things you need to do before going to certain parts of the level – pressing a switch, collecting a powerup or destroying a block – to make sure you can get through there or get back to the rest of the level once you've grabbed what you need. Getting trapped would be very annoying if the game had a lives system but fortunately, it doesn't. As is stands, mistakes merely force you to restart the level, wiser to its trickiness than you were before.
