Let's Play Crystal Caves HD #16: Calamitous Conclusion
This is my first playthrough through this game. Kindly avoid posting spoilers in the comments or solutions to puzzles either in this video or future ones so as not to spoil the experience for me or those that haven’t seen the game before.
Mylo has but a few areas of the mine to explore and thus, his search for riches is drawing to an end. Hopefully he can use the crystals acquired on this world to buy passage home to his massive fast food empire and forget that all this ever happened but something tells me that his luck may have finally run out. That's not to say he's doomed to never get home, I just think that it's going to be that simple and when things aren't that simple for Mylo, it means much misfortune and woe.
I might very well be wrong but considering I'm writing this description for a video I've already recorded, something tells me I might be on to something.
I expected Crystal Caves HD to be pretty decent, what with it being an Apogee game at its core. What I didn't anticipate was just how enjoyable it would be. The core gameplay is solid and not too difficult, though it certainly ramps up the challenge as the episodes progress. For those looking to rack up a huge score, there's lots of collectibles, enemies and lots of optional objectives. The controls are tight, the story passable and the aesthetic is very charming. The enhanced version only adds to all this, giving us great music, better graphics and quality of life changes that only make the game better. The level editor allows for near endless replayability, be it through levels made by others or yourself. If there's one thing I'd change about the game it's that I'd of liked more of and honestly, that's not a critique.
So, what's next? It's time to veer away from platformers and step into the world of the surreal with a puzzle game unlike any I've ever played before. In it, we will be subverting not just our expectations but our very perception of reality and all in aid of… something. There will be cheese, however. Cheese makes everything better.
See you next let's play!
