Welcome to my very first playthrough of Dark Souls 3. This playthrough will be blind. I've played and loved every Souls game up till now, and I can't wait to enjoy this one. So come and experience what promises to be one of the greatest games of the year with me.

After defeating that mace-wielding knight at last, we run into the very familiar Knight of Thorns. Shortcuts are opened and th-OH GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Dark Souls 3 is a part of the burgeoning genre of Souls-esque games , and is a member of the Souls series for which the “not-quite-a-genre-yet” is named. It is marked by its dripping dark and gothic atmospheric setting, its challenging yet both rewarding and fair gameplay, fantastic continuous vertical level design, intricate boss and enemy design, and its dedicated community. The game revolves around player versus enemy (PvE) elements in a mostly single player experience with the opportunity for jolly cooperation. The player must fight their way through a hostile world, lighting bonfires along the way, making their way to link the fire of the first flame. However there are also online elements, including the aforementioned cooperation, and player versus player (PvP) in which you can invade other players worlds or be invaded yourself. Prior Souls games had you play as simply an undead, however in Dark Souls 3 you play as an unkindled.

Released on 24 March 2016 for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC, Dark Souls 3 is the third installment in the Souls Franchise by developer From Software. The first game in the series, Demon’s Souls, was released on 5 February 2009 as an exclusive for the Sony Playstation 3 and was initially considered a failure by Sony. Though upon release in the United States, it quickly became a cult hit. With the eventual success of Demon’s Souls putting Hidetaka Miyazaki at the forefront of From Software, they began work on the spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls: Dark Souls. The first Dark Souls much anticipated release was in 2011 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and eventually the PC. It immediately received widespread critical acclaim, with some arguing it to be one of the greatest games ever made. It was followed by Dark Souls 2, and although it was a great game in its own right, without Hidetaka Miyazaki on board it failed to live up to the reputation of Dark Souls. But, Hidetaka Miyazaki was busy working on another project: Bloodbourne. Bloodbourne was the result of Sony’s regret in not following up the success of Demon’s Souls. It was released March 2015, unfortunately as an exclusive for the Playstation 4. While not officially a part of the Dark Souls franchise, it is certainly a spiritual successor in the same way Dark Souls was to Demon’s Souls, drawing many of the same elements.

Dark Souls 3 has an 89 on Metacritic for the PC and Playstation 4 and an 87 for the Xbox One. It won Game of the Year in the 2016 Golden Joystick Awards and received various nominations for other awards. As of right now the game has released one DLC pack titled the Ashes of Ariandel. Dark Souls 3 was published by Bandai Namco Entertainment and developed by From Software. It was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and is purported to be the last game in the Dark Souls franchise.

Dark Souls 3 is available for purchase on Steam.

For an alternate game recommendation, Salt and Sanctuary is a critically acclaimed indie developed game in the burgeoning Souls-esque genre. Check out my blind playthrough of it here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1QztZS-WybH3cYKrEWgdogCQ_uE_b9-e&disable_polymer=true
