One day, back in 1993, I walked over to my stepdad's brother, who I call my uncle, as he had a fairly good PC for the time and disposable income to actually buy games for it. Going there was always a lot of fun and, if I was lucky, he would go to see his TV shows, leaving me to be able to play for a tiny bit before having to go back home.

When I arrived, I saw the new box sitting on the table. "Doom" it said. The crazy amount of details on the cover filled my young innocent mind with the very idea that this is something special.

I jumped onto the chair next to him by the computer as he started it up, most likely wondering if it is even okay to show a youngster this bloody game, but thankfully he let me stare at the screen, looking in awe at the grotestque imagery, jumping at the vivid graphics and obscene sounds.

The next day in school, I couldn't stop talking about it. I didn't get to try it out until some time later, but it felt so good, incredibly immersive and controlling "Doom Guy" through the levels was a humbling experience in just what was possible in a rapidly changing gaming industry.

And the game is still as relevant now as it was back then. The Doom community is massive, levels and mods are being developed daily. Doom mods figure massively every year on the moddb ranking list.

And the game is still a blast to play today, with or without mods. People still play deathmatch, which is still a fast, high octane fragfest of fun.

But I am super well aware that I am speaking from a place of nostalgia.

Each level, each sound, the music, are all things I have seen or heard maybe hundreds of times throughout my life and they are like an old friend who I will never tire of.

The polish, the pride, the crazy amount of creativity in these games made id software a household name back then and there weren't many computers that didn't have a copy of the shareware version of one of their games.

It also became a benchmark for electrical equipment and devices, if it was possible to get Doom to run on them. Currently it runs on pregnancy tests, fridges and pianos, among other.

A long story short, I wanted to show just some of that joy as I showcase the difference from 1993 Doom to today's Doom, modded to give it that yummy vanilla plus feeling, keeping the spirit of the game but just adding that much extra fun.

I don't know if it would be easy to get into this game if you have never played it before, but if you do, you are in for a ride and I don't feel that the aging graphics has made it unplayable, at all.

There is also a VR mod if you feel like it. I tried it briefly but the moment was so fast that it felt like I was on a runaway skateboard and I just wanted to fall so I could get off the ride.

Note that Bethesda updated this version to make it "playable" out of the box, with their own version of the engine, as well as quick and easy installation of various levels and mods. It's not "supported", as such, by the community, so the general recommendation is to get a source port.

Here is a well-written guide, that's still very up to date: https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/113477-new-to-classic-doom-read-this-tutorial-for-help/
