Well the good news about the AI finding you first is that means there is a clear route to their base. In most cases, the Garrisons the AI has will usually be easier to defeat than further away random encounters (unless you happen to be two provinces apart from each other or the AI somehow gets a hold of a really powerful Garrison such as Ogres).

I also bug out some Medusa.

Medusa are incredibly nasty due to their long range long duration petrify gaze along with powerful melee attacks and poisons. They have more than enough ammo to completely lock down an army and kill them all before you can even fight back if you are not prepared.
