Game Description:
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is a first-person adventure video game that is developed by The Chinese Room and SCE Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. A spiritual successor to Dear Esther, the game is set in a large open world and is a story driven game. Initially announced for Microsoft Windows, the game has been released for the PlayStation 4, with no plans at present for a release on PC.
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is based around six characters, each telling their own story, and each connected to landmarks in the world that evolve as the game progresses. The game takes place in a village in Shropshire during the apocalypse.
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture differs from its spiritual predecessor by allowing more interaction, such as manipulating objects and opening and closing doors. While playing, the player is able to influence the events that take place.
During the development of Dear Esther, the team wanted to introduce interactive elements. It became clear to the team that it simply wasn't going to work, thus the concept of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture was born. Unlike Dear Esther before it, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture will not appear on PCs, instead being a PlayStation exclusive. The team made the decision to partner with Sony as they felt they could not raise enough money for the project through crowd funding sources or through sales of alpha versions.
The developers were inspired by British apocalyptic science fiction of the 1960s and 1970s, like John Christopher's The Death of Grass and A Wrinkle in the Skin, John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids and Charles Eric Maine's The Tide Went Out.
The game's soundtrack is composed by Jessica Curry and published by Sony Classical as a 28 track album in Britain.
Early reviews for Everybody's Gone to the Rapture were positive from critics, with particular praise regarding the game's visuals, environments, storytelling, and sound design. It has a score of 77% on Metacritic IGN awarded it a score of 8.5 out of 10, saying "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is a beautiful, heart-breaking journey into the end of the world."
