The Sole Survivor of Vault 111 and his wife are the main characters of Fallout 4's narrative, which centers on their quest for their missing son Shaun. Ten years after Fallout 3, in the year 2287, Fallout 4 is set in and around the Boston area. Along the way, the Sole Survivor learns about a society plagued by paranoia over a race of artificial but also biological human-like people known as synths, as well as a mystery organization known only as the Institute. The Sole Survivor and the player are both confronted with moral dilemmas as a result of the synth-focused plot, including how far people should experiment with science, the propriety of constructing sentient living devices that communicate emotions and suffering, and what it means to be a human.
