The fixed encounters with the Captains is one of the BEST places to grind in the whole game. You can win lots of goodies including the Flame Bow, Golden Armor, Curse Tome, or a Toad Tome. If you are playing the NES version this is the earliest you can get TOAD and might be seriously worth grinding for. Other than that, the Flame Bow is a very good pick up, especially if you are going for the Solo Front Line Firion strat and have everyone else in the back row.
