Let's Play Final Fantasy IX // Part 15: Kuja's Errand To Oeilvert
The party locates Kuja's palace under some quicksand on the Outer Continent. Kuja quickly takes them captive and sends Zidane, Freya, Steiner and Quina to Oeilvert, a location on the Forgotten Continent, to retrieve an item called the Gulug Stone, in exchange for sparing the lives of the rest of the party. They use the stolen Hilda Garde airship. Kuja goes back on his word and sets an hourglass, which when it runs out, will send the rest of the captive party (Vivi, Garnet, Eiko and Amarant) into a floor-is-lava doom. Regent Cid, in frog form, becomes a hero and frees the rest of the party. Some pretty gnarly battles along the way, including the iconic Cactuar, and a boss fight with Ark.

My eXperience with FFIX goes back to 2000. As a young parent raised on Atari, NES and SNES, I'd never really carried the video game bug with me into the PlayStation age, I'd moved on to other hobbies (music mostly). Once I'd heard about FFIX coming out, though, it immediately gave me the feels for FFI (NES) but especially for FFIV (FF2 on SNES in the US) and FFVI (FF3 on SNES in the US). I wasn't a gamer at all at the time so I didn't really give a crap that the PSone was a dying console, soon to be phased out by the PS2. I don't even remember how I heard about it, may have walked past it in a Walmart or something, but the visuals for this game are what brought me to it, so I happily bought a new PSone, a copy of FFIX, and was immediately rewarded with what remains, 21 years on, as my favorite of all time, which I have played through at least a dozen times over the years.
So join me, if you're down to hang, for a nice chill run (with some sidequests and goodie hunting) through my favorite game, FFIX. No speedrun here. I'll cut out the grindy bits and reserve the right to go full 9999 cheat whenever I damn well please-- I ain't in this for any gamer cred-- just for my own (and hopefully your) enjoyment and that's it. :)
