Let's Play Final Fantasy VI - Introduction
The introduction to my next LP... coming very soon.
I shouldn't really need to... but I will delve into this game and why I am playing it here. Lets take a look!
First and foremost, Final Fantasy VI (III when launched in USA) is my favorite game of all time. And that will never change. I grew up to this game. With this game. From this game. This game helped teach me things at a young age that schools don't provide in any grade. It helped open my eyes and mature me faster than many of my peers. Things like honor and loyalty, sacrifice, pain, trust, determination, commitment, heroism love, and hope. %^&* your long division, I was shown how to be a quality human being.
It helped set the tone for who I wanted to be and how I wanted to be that person.
Many institutions are in debate over "Are video games art?" lately. The answer may appear easy to us, but still requires selectivity. This game in particular is absolutely a work of art. A masterpiece among masterpieces. Quite possibly the greatest interactive artistic marvel that human kind can and/or will produce. (I feel capable to say that because few art pieces are interactive). It certainly helps to set a precedence for the pinnacle of video games.
Final Fantasy VI is a Classical JRPG. Classical not in the sense of 'original' or 'cliche', but classical as in to establish that this game came from a time before such trends were expected or associated to JRPGs. Before the genre washed itself out and fades away in a rather pitiful heap. Many of its quality features are due to the era of whence it came, during a time period in gaming history that meant video games in general were niche and obscure -- a viewpoint that we as fans, critics, and developers will never see again. What this trait brings to the table means that the focus was directed towards making every facet of the game worth it. Polishing every single moment and detail without worrying as much about sales or publicity or graphics. Yes those were important, but if you do your job properly -- those will come along with the game. Those will be a reward that speaks for the game, not the goal of launching one. Final Fantasy VI hits this better than any game I've ever experienced... and trust me I've been around the gaming block. Does it have some faults? Absolutely. Nothing is truly perfect, but more on that later.
Many people these days frown upon RPGs, as they have fallen not so gracefully from their might of previous console generations. If you are one of these people who doesn't care for RPGs, I implore you to give this LP a shot. Give it time, 5-10 episodes. It will surprise you. It will change your perspective. It will wrap you in and enthrall you in a way you would not have expected from a game this "old", with "bad graphics", or of this JRPG genre.
I've always asked people to think of an RPG like they would an epic fantasy novel or movie. But instead of turning a page, you ARE the character. You must defeat the evil guy, save the princess, sacrifice yourself, or do whatever is necessary for the chapter to proceed. If you die, the story ends. You can't just turn a page. If the main character wants to go to Point A in a book, you go there. But what if you think there are clues somewhere else? An RPG will let you explore other avenues. A quality RPG will be able to suck you in stronger than any novel because it doesn't just bring you along for the ride, it gives you the keys.
They can be life changing. They can be a masterpiece. Call of Duty wishes it could have an impact like an RPG.
I will LP this game to its fullest. I will not miss any treasure, I will view as many of the scenes as possible, I will explore each character's story. I will review the game as I play it with a fair perspective and point out its flaws when they arise, as well as promote its stellar moments.
There will be no grinding. There will be tugs on the heart strings. There will be one unforgettable experience.
