If I'm going to understand the modern third-person shooter, the best way is to go back to the game that popularized the cover-based, health-regenerating third-person shooter and play Gears of War.

Marcus Fenix has been in prison for the last four years but the tide of humanity's war against the Locust has turned for the worse. In a last ditch effort to save humanity, Fenix has been freed and re-enlisted into the military on what might be a suicide mission...

Gears of War is a third-person shooter developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios in 2006 for the Xbox 360. It was ported to Windows PC by People Can Fly in 2007. It was subsequently remastered as Gears of War: Ultimate Edition by The Coalition for Xbox One in 2015 and Windows in 2016. The 2007 PC release is played here.

Gears of War focuses on a small group of soldiers attempting to activate a device that will map the underground tunnels used by The Locust, humanity's archnemesis on the planet Sera. This intelligence will allow for a bomb to be launched into the tunnels in a final, desperate attempt to save humanity from annihilation.
