Glory of Heracles is a Japanese RPG series by Data East which closely follows the formula established by Dragon Quest (except for the recent DS installment) but using an Ancient Greek setting. Most installments in the series were written by Kazushige Nojima, who would later write many Final Fantasy scenarios starting with the Playstation era.

The third game in the series was the first for the Super Famicom (SNES) and was critically acclaimed for its scenario. The reputation Nojima built with this game earned him a job at Square among the FFVII staff. Director Yoshinori Kitase explicitly asked him to write a mystery scenario for FFVII like the one in GoH3.

This episodes also gives some explanation on the origin of the monsters swarming the world in Glory of Heracles 3. It is different to most other RPGs where monsters often are a kind of natural animal. It is worth mentioning that Final Fantasy II, although not written by Nojima, also has a similar origin for its monsters so the concept wasn't entirely alien to the series when Nojima brought it with him from Glory of Heracles 3:
