Tifa is still recovering, so Jack gets to play another game from his childhood that she doesn't particularly care for.
Welcome to Myrtana! King Rhobar is trying to fight off the invading orcs and for that, he needs the magic ore. Desperate to turn the tide, everybody that commits any sort of crime gets punished with being thrown into the colony to mine ore. And there's no way out for those inside - a magical barrier traps all living beings in the colony.
So after being thrown into the colony and receiving a warm welcome from our fellow inmates, we have to get used to our new surroundings. Equipped with nothing but a quick wit, a loose mouth and looser morals, as well as a sealed letter for the Mages of Fire, we must learn how to survive. Literally - besides being locked up with criminals, the wildlife is also quite eager to treat you as a fresh snack.
Not everybody wants you dead, however. Some people are happy to help you out - sometimes at a price - and some are even trying to find ways to escape...
Made by German developer Piranha Bytes, Gothic blew the minds of those that played it when it released in 2001. It boasted an open world, multiple ways to tackle quests, NPCs with full-day schedules, good graphics, a beautiful soundtrack and full voice acting. Cult classic The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind released a year later and didn't manage all of that.
Gothic is... janky, clunky and old by modern standards. But even though that might turn you away, the game itself is good enough to make up for it. Fantasy games are a dime a dozen, but the realistic dirty, gritty presentation and the tongue in cheek writing that doesn't shy away from allowing you to be just as much (or more) of an asshole as the people around you manage to create a believable world that pulls you in.
Fans have made tons of mods and patches for the series over the years, including the ones used for this playthrough. Check out https://www.worldofgothic.de/ to have a look! Most of it is in German, so we recommend using the translate function of your browser.
