Tifa is sick, so Jack gets to play another game he feels a certain way for and she... doesn't.
Sonic has been arrested - and nothing makes sense, really. Robotnik is breaking into a government base, trying to unearth something his grandfather worked on. And because everybody is effectively blind, the plot gets to happen.
As the much-anticipated sequel to the flagship Dreamcast launch title, Sonic Adventure 2 had quite a bit to live up to.
And it doesn't, really.
Gone is the adventure aspect from the first game. No more hub worlds and a story you can take at your own pace. From the moment the game starts, Sonic Team throws a story at you that makes straight-to-DVD movies look good and only works if you don't ever ask how or why. And there are no breaks - if you aren't being blitzed by cutscenes, you're thrown into gameplay.
Sonic Adventure 2 tells it's story from the perspective of the good guys - Sonic, Tails and Knuckles - and the bad guys - Robotnik and series newcomers Rouge the Bat aka "bat girl" and Shadow the Hedgehog (sans guns in this one). Sonic and Shadow get to run and jump through stages, Tails and Robotnik wreck stuff with their mechs' guns blazing and Knuckles and Rouge get to search for three items per stage.
If you played Sonic Adventure and thought "This gameplay could be amazing if it wasn't so buggy", well, you're in for exactly the same experience again. Camera glitches that seem to try their hardest to induce seizures, physics breaking and to top it off, a bunch of different actions all being done by the same button, depending on context in a game that tends to forget to consider that context. What could go wrong?!
In for a penny, in for a pound and if you play one Sonic Adventure, you kinda have to play both. Thankfully, fans also have made patches and mods for this game, to at least polish it as much as can be done.
Live and learn everyone! Also, RIP moon.
