Let's Play Guild of Dungeoneering Gameplay - Episode 9 - Orc Warlords Must Die
Episode 9 of Guild of Dungeoneering delivers us directly into the Orc Warlord's clutches. Can we finally defeat this monstrous beastie?
Guild of Dungeoneering is a game which combines an old-school tabletop RPG style (evocative of Dungeons and Dragons - D&D) and Dungeon Builder games like Dungeon Keeper, Dungeons, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, etc. The game has a unique and interesting art and music style. The art is a mostly black-and-white pen and paper style with splashes of color for emphasis; the music features a bard telling the story of your guild dungeoneers with macabre undertones, often referring to them as stupid or foreshadowing their untimely, early deaths.
Guild of Dungeoneering is developed by Indie developer Gambrinous under Publisher Versus Evil. The game has been comapared often to the tabletop game Munchkins, a personal favorite of mine. Guild of Dungeoneering is available on Steam for $14.99 at http://store.steampowered.com/app/317820/

Guild of Dungeoneering has roots which can be traced back to the very beginning of games and video games alike. Perhaps the oldest tabletop strategy game of all and the grandaddy of video games themselves is Dungeons and Dragons. Guild of Dungeoneering draws more than a few inspirations from D&D in the way it levels up and even in the way it plays off classic Dungeons and Dragons tropes. For example, the first dungeon I encountered had the caption "Rats - How original!" Perhaps my favorite feature in games like these is the ability to rename your dungeoneers, as from a Let's Play perspective this allows me to entertain and customize the character names, naming them after viewers, people in my own personal life, or even celebrities. Small features like this are what makes a game like Guild of Dungeoneering really stand out and perhaps even outshine some AAA offerings.

Steam describes the premise of the game as follows:
"Guild of Dungeoneering"
http://store.steampowered.com/app/317820/
"Become the ultimate Dungeon Master as you bribe, entice and coax your heroes through their adventures on a quest to restore your guild to its ultimate glory!
Guild of Dungeoneering is a turn-based dungeon crawler with a twist: instead of controlling the hero you build the dungeon around him. Using cards drawn from your Guild decks, you lay down rooms, monsters, traps and of course loot! Meanwhile your hero is making his own decisions on where to go and what to fight. But will he be strong enough to take on the dungeon's overlord? In between dungeon runs you manage your Guild, building new rooms to attract new classes of adventurer and to expand your decks of cards with more powerful items and events."

Giantbomb describes the gameplay as follows:
"Guild of Dungeoneering: Gameplay"
http://www.giantbomb.com/guild-of-dungeoneering/3030-45688/
"The player does not control the dungeoneer directly, instead the game plays out in a turn based fashion. Each turn the player receives new cards, you can place three cards per turn, then your dungeoneer moves one space. The player has five cards maximum, but can discard any card they choose.
The goal of a the game is to eventually make it to the boss and defeat him. To do so the dungeoneer mus become stronger by defeating enemies, which in turn allows you to place loot, which can make you stronger. The player can also decide to lure the dungeoneer toward rooms holding treasure chests. Doing so will sacrifice valuable time that can lead to the dungeon boss becoming more powerful. A countdown timer is displayed onscreen showing how angry the boss is getting at his failing monsters. When the timer finishes, the boss will leave his room and proceed to find the dungeoneer in a fit of rage."
