8Hraesvelgr is a tough nuts to crack, simply BECAUSE his words and his actions aren't in line, due to his conflicted emotions.
He's using the 'trial' here both as an excuse to release some of the aggression he's been holding onto for 1,000 years, while giving himself rationalization to re-enter the fray after such dormancy. He's stayed out of the war and told his children to not bring discord into his home...because he DOES long for those days of peace. He just can't bring himself to admit it because in his eyes, that means betrayal to his own kin by virtue of failure to see justice done for his sister's murder, even though the aggressors are long since dead.
Alphinaud has some SERIOUS balls to call him on his crap, and he helps win over the wyrm not by insulting his anger at the murder of his own, but by pointing out the lies Hraesvelgr is telling himself.
