Freshly caught Spearow needs some experience for the next objective, and I come up with a rather retarded idea on where to get the experience. I sorely overestimated the frequency in which bugs appear on Route 2. Either way, happy times for all, as rather than gain levels off of Weedles, I catch one instead.

In Red you can find Weedle wandering Route 2 alongside the typical Pidgeys and Ratattas. Weedle is Bug/Poison type and only knows Poison Sting (a weak Poison Type move with a chance to, you know, poison) and String Shot (reduces the speed of the opposing Pokémon). It evolves quickly, though, first to Kakuna at level 7, then to Beedrill at level 10. Beedril will eventually learn Twinneedle and Pin Missile; two of the three damaging Bug Type moves in the game. They will be quite helpful for a gym or two down the road.

In Blue you can run into Caterpie on Route 2. Caterpie, like Weedle, is Bug Type, though it is a pure bug type, and only knows Tackle and String Shot. Also like Weedle it evolves quickly, first to Metapod at level 7 then to Butterfree at level 10. Butterfree is a quick special attacker which learns no Bug Type moves, but gets all three powder moves as well as some Psychic attacks. If you chose Charmander as your starter, picking up a Butterfree is highly recommended for the first gym.

After catching Weedle, I pause for a while to train all three of my Pokémon to level 8 for the next objective which is found on the route west of Viridian.
