Let's Play Pokémon Red! Part 8- Winning the Boulderbadge
We've stocked up on some Potion and now we head back to Pewter Gym to face down the Gym Leader Brock. As mentioned previously, Pewter Gym is dedicated to Rock Types, so Brock is packing two Ground/Rock Types: a Geodude and Onix at level 12 and 14 (10 and 12 in Yellow). As Shallots is not yet level 13, he doesn't have Vine Whip yet, so this match is going to be a long haul.
Geodude is simple enough. All he can really do is Tackle, which we blunt by Growling him down to minimum attack. First turn we use Leech Seed, which will heal us a little every turn while damaging just a little bit. After that, Growl six times and begin using Tackle for minimal damage. It should go down without too much of a fight.
Onix, however, has a trick up its sleeve. In addition to Tackle, Onix knows Screech, which lowers our defense by two out of six possible stages, and Bide, which I just recently learned skips the accuracy check when it attacks. Just like Geodude, Leech Seed first turn and start Growling, even though Screech will eventually more or less cancel out the lowering of its attack. Watch for Bide; if you see Onix use it, it would be best to use Growl the next turn instead of Tackle, since Bide keeps track of the amount of damage you do while it's charging, and will hit you for what I think is twice the damage you hit it for. Onix is faster than most Rock Types, and has incredible defense, but has much lower HP and attack than you would expect from such as this. Just keep ahead of him and hope he uses Bide, which works in you favor since the HP you take from Leech Seed doesn't count towards Bide.
Win this match and you get the Boulderbadge. Outside of allowing you to use the almost worthless HM Flash outside of battle, I can't remember what this Badge is supposed to do. If anyone knows, feel free to leave a note in the comments.
Oh, and of course Shallots would learn Vine Whip AFTER we needed it...
