Let's Play Quest for Glory 1 VGA #25: Becoming a Hero
This is my first time playing through this game. Kindly avoid posting major spoilers in the comments.
The last thing I expected to see in a stronghold full of brigands is a wacky maze run by a jester masquerading as a warlock, but this is a Sierra game and they're want to scatter silly things here and there. Presuming we can get past the devious trickery that is this maze, we'll come face-to-face with the brigand leader who absolutely isn't someone very improtant that we need to use the dispel potion on.
Once the brigands are taken care of - presuming, of course, we can take care of them - all that's left for us to do is to drive Baba Yaga from the valley for us to complete the prophecy and become a hero. Will we succeed or will we stumble at the final hurdle?
Quest for Glory was a game I'd heard people say was good and I'm happy to say that I found it just as good as its reputation, if not better. The mixture of RPG elements and point and click mechanics works extremely well and while the story is a bit bare bones, it was more than deep enough for the time the original EGA game came out. The remake adds beautiful VGA graphics and a far better control interface that makes the game much more accessible while still retaining what made the original good. That's not to say the game is without flaws, however. Much of the valley itself loses purpose when you're maxed out in combat stats and the actual puzzles are few and far between, though that can be a good thing when Sierra is involved. Still, neither of those points detract enough from the game to stop it from being lots of fun, enough so that I'm looking forward to eventually tackling the sequel with Derek the fighter. If you haven't play the game yourself I encourage you to do so, perhaps with a different class so you can see the alternate puzzle solutions.
So, what's next? I have a plan in mind for the next major game, but for now I'm going to play a small palette cleanser for that portable gaming system I hold so many dear memories with. As for the game itself, it's something that I've played before on a different platform, a cutesy game that's full of magic, mystery and missiles. Yes, you read that right: missiles.
See you next let's play!
