Let’s Play Ravenloft Strahd’s Possession #03: Welcome to Barovia
465This is my first playthrough through this game. Kindly avoid posting spoilers in the comments or solutions to puzzles either in this video or future ones so as not to spoil the experience for me or those that haven’t seen the game before.
The long chase has finally ended. The exhausted assassin has decided to make a stand in a small glade not far from lord Dhelt’s castle. Shrouded in a thick cloak and wielding wickedly sharp daggers, he’s not a foe to be taken lightly; Dhelt is himself a capable warrior and Baranta is a mighty wizard of great renown. They were both taken by surprise, however, something that Jerard and Alurora will not be. All they need do is strike down the assassin, retrieve the amulet and return it to fulfil their vow.
If only they knew what was to come…
While Ravenloft shares some similarities with the Eye of the Beholder series, it departs from it in many ways as well. The party size is limited to four with only two of them created by the player but the more dramatic chance is how you move about the world. While dungeons are navigated using the traditional grid-based system, the overworld locales allow you to move about freely in a way not too dissimilar from Ultima Underworld. That’s not the only thing that I’ll need to get used to, however, for the game forces you to hit the ground running right away; the assassin is quite capable of slaying an ill-prepared duo of adventures and the area afterwards does not joke around in the slightest.
