Resident Evil, released for the Playstation 1 in 1996, fathered the survival horror genre. Shinji Mikami, the game's creator, took inspiration from previous Capcom horror games such as Sweet Home along with George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. In RE1 a group of special operatives are trapped in a deadly mansion while investigating reports of incidents of cannibalism in the area. Playable characters Chris and Jill must survive attacks by zombies and other monsters while getting to the heart of the mystery.

Resident Evil 7, like Resident Evil 4 before it, represents a dramatic departure from the formula established and cemented in the first three games. The game features a first person perspective, a greater emphasis on horror, PSVR compatibility, and a new protagonist in Ethan Winters.

Not A Hero is free story-based DLC which picks up after the end of Resident Evil 7 and follows Chris Redfield's pursuit of Lucas Baker.
