Let's Play Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI Part 5: Capturing Cheng Du
17It's the day the music died. We begin conquering the historical cities that composed Shu, starting off with the capital of the Shu-Han, Cheng Du. This comes at the expense of Liu Zhang. Fortunately, Pang Tong isn't with us, which means he will not be slain in Luo county.
The capturing of Cheng Du and Shu from Liu Zhang is a pivotal moment for Liu Bei and his army and it hopefully will prove the same for us.
*Historical Context*
Firstly, Liu Bei left Zhuge Liang, Zhang Fei, Guan Yu, and Zhao Yun in Jing Province, so this war took longer than it otherwise would. When Pang Tong was killed, Liu Bei lost his primary strategist for this campaign, (as Liang was in Jing).
Pang Tong convinced Liu Bei to seize the land of Yi Province, (the capital of which is Cheng Du), in order to compete with Cao Cao. Liu Zhang is convinced by Zhang Song to send Fa Zheng to Jing Province, (Liu Bei's territory at the time), to secure an alliance. The actual circumstances for this are still debated. One hand says that Zhang Lu was preparing to assault Yi Province and Liu Zhang was requesting aid, the other hand says that decision was based on a rumor that Cao Cao was going to attack Zhang Lu. Regardless, Liu Bei arrived at the territory and soon recieved troops and supplies from Liu Zhang.
Zhang Song's older brother would discover his plan to have Liu Bei take over Yi and reports this to Liu Zhang. Liu Zhang has Zhang Song executed and moves to attack Liu Bei, but the news doesn't reach his frontline men in time. Liu Bei takes more advice from Pang Tong, luring generals Yang Huai and Gao Pei out of fortified positions and killing them before Liu Zhang's army can get word to them.
Liu Zhang's army soon put up a spirited defense, but numourous defections by generals such as Wu Yi, Li Yan, and Fei Guan to Liu Bei caused Liu Zhang's force to be forced back to Luo. Pang Tong would be killed here and the siege would be prolonged.
After Luo fell, Liu Bei marched on Cheng Du. Ma Chao would be convinced at this time to join Liu Bei and bring fresh troops to the front. Seeing this, Liu Zhang would surrender to Liu Bei despite his vassals attempts to get him to continue fighting.
