Let's Play Sid Meier's Colonization (1994) - The Dutch Viceroy of America - Episode 01
234Sid Meier's Colonization is a true classic in the empire building genre, and in my opinion it is a superior game to its decade-younger remake based on the Civ 4 engine. Once more, the game beckons me to storm the shores of the new world to stake a claim.
A comment on my run half a year ago spurred this playthrough - I took it as almost a dare; to play at Viceroy difficulty on the standard Americas map. I rarely if ever play Civ-style games on higher difficulty than the baseline where the AI (almost) doesn't cheat, so this could go sour in a hurry. :-p
The Americas map is both a challenge and a blessing; you'll know exactly the shape of the landmass and base terrain; only resource deposits and village locations are scrambled. The four spawn points therefore all have unequal value and a fairly clear go-to strategy. Don't expect to be a rum magnate if you spawn off of Canada.
Being a wuss, I did go with the Dutch, arguably the strongest nation in Colonization.
