Sonic Adventure, one of the biggest games in Sonic history, and my personal favorite. This game is pretty famous for being Sonic's big jump into the 3D world, and Sega's answer to Super Mario 64. And while my preferences go to Super Mario 64, this game is still pretty damn fantastic. For Sonic's first time in a 3D environment, he looked pretty great. He has a makeover in design, but for his first time in 3D he looks great. Sure, other games at the time looked better, hell, some people might even say that Super Mario 64 actually looks better than Sonic Adventure, despite being roughly three years older. This game wasn't the best in looks in it's day and age. And there were many relevant issues with it. Mission cards that appear when a level starts, telling you to "find the Chaos Emerald," or "destroy the capsule," it'll just load a random texture, and on a rare occasion actually load the proper mission textbox. The cutscene animation could have been better to. At some points the characters models will totally bug out, like often Sonic's eyes roll perfectly up and down, like his head belongs in a slot machine in Las Vegas or something. But admittedly, its all kinda memorable. It's pretty hard to forget the generic mouth movements that Sonic has while in his cutscenes. And Tails has some gameplay that is extremely fun, not found in any other Sonic game. Exploiting his flying abilities is hella fun, and you can really power through levels. Most people only say that the first half of the game is fun, Sonic is awesome, Tails is brokenly fun, and Knuckles is decent in his own right. But many don't really care for Amy, Big Or Gamma. Amy is just a watered down version of Sonic with hammer attacks over homing attacks. Whatever. It's still a get to the goal mission every time. Simple. Easy. Fun. Big is something else. Admittedly, who really asked for fishing in a Sonic game. Seriously Sega, if I want to go fishing, I'll pull out my copy of Sega Bass Fishing or Sega Marine Fishing, both on Sega Dreamcast, both more fun than Big. But Big really, is just there. Something uncalled for, but pretty much harmless. People asked for guns and shooting and shit in a Sonic game, so Gamma was born. You either love or hate him. Or her. Anyhow, this is what I consider a pristine Sonic game. Sega just can't make Sonic games as good as these were. They had a fun patch of an idea when they unveiled Sonic Unleashed (Daytime), and perfected this newfound formula through Sonic Colors and continued it in Generations. But they aren't really going places anymore since they threw out the Unleashed engine, and continue to exploit the Boom series that everyone hates and doesn't like. Seriously Sega, fuck the Boom series. Nobody likes it, and it would be best if you just took a few steps back in your history, to Unleashed-Generations, or to the Adventure series. But this is the 25th Anniversary of Sonic, and with a new Sonic game rumored in the works, hopefully Sega with get off the Boom train, and bring Sonic back to the blue blur we love.
