S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl has a lot of dots in its name and now that I have said that, I can say that it is a janky yet wonderful experience. Released in 2007, the game tries to do something that we haven't quite seen before; being a scavenger in a radioactive hell on Earth and making it work.

Through the jank, the, at times, poor translations, the dated gameplay, shines a world that somehow manages to immerse you almost completely. Clever level design, a bucket full of the colour brown as well as a lot of vegetation, builds a grim representation of what the area around Chernobyl would look like after a second explosion happened. A mutated wasteland, it invites you in with it's dangers and the general unknown.

It's a game I am happy that I played and while I feel that you don't necessarily need to skip this game to play the (arguably) slightly better sequel and the interesting prequel, I'd say just feeling how immersive such an older game can be quite lovely in of itself.

It's never jarring, it's just jank and it becomes part of it's charm.

I'd recommend playing it with mods for some quality of life changes, the "right" mods to use has been argued ever since release but I can recommend the newly released one I used, see the top of this description.
