Bei SotS2 handelt es sich um ein 4x-StrategieGame, in dem ihr die Qual der Wahl zwischen 7 unterschiedlichen Rassen habt - alle AddOns vorausgesetzt. Zug um Zug wird geforscht, erkundet, kolonisiert und erobert. Die Übersichtskarte läuft rundenbasiert, in den Weltraumschlachten wird in eine Echtzeitansicht gewechselt, in der ihr die Schiffe manuell steuern könnt - oder ihr lasst den Kampf einfach gleich vom Computer austragen...
