The Messenger is an action-platform game developed by the independent Quebec-based studio Sabotage Studio and published by Devolver Digital. It was released on Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch on August 30, 2018.
In a fallen world, the remnants of humanity live in a small cliffside village on the only remaining island in an endless ocean. They spend their lives training as ninjas for their own survival and because it is said that every 500 years an army of demons attacks to try to bring humankind to their knees. The humans are kept hopeful by a legend about a hero that will fly in from the western ocean and task one of them with the role of carrying a scroll to the peak of the mountain on the other side of the island, which is paramount to humanity's survival.
One day, during daily training, the village is suddenly attacked by demons and their king. A young ninja attempts to take on the demon king but is forced back. Before the Demon King can kill him, the Western Hero arrives, an Archer riding on a phoenix, forcing the Demons' retreat. The Hero gives the Ninja a scroll and appoints him The Messenger before disappearing.
The Ninja, now as the Messenger, begins traveling east toward the mountain. Along the way he meets the Shopkeeper, a mysterious blue-robed entity who runs a shop that seems to sit outside of time, who sells him upgrades and tells him stories as well as advises him on areas and upcoming boss fights; Quarble, a demon enlisted by the "powers that be" to rewind time in the event of the Messenger's death, and a cast of other characters.
The game presents itself as a simple tribute to 8-bit retro action-platformer in which the player controls a Ninja-like warrior sent on an important mission to deliver a magical scroll atop a distant eastern Mountain. During his adventures, the ninja unlocks new abilities such as climbing walls, throwing magical shurikens, gliding and a Rope Dart. The game also uses a mechanic called "Cloudstepping" (gaining additional height from enemies while killing them). During the game, the player unlocks the power to travel into the future, effectively transforming the game into a 16-bit era metroidvania game, where new paths unlock through the finding of secret passages and artifacts.
Sabotage Studio is an indie development studio based in Quebec City founded by Thierry Boulanger and Martin Brouard in 2016. The Messenger will be their first game to come out but the team is made up of video game veterans that all worked together for several years and came together to create this project that brew in Thierry Boulanger's mind since he was a child. The music is composed by Eric Brown, better known as Rainbowdragoneyes. Each track was made in both 8-bit and 16-bit styles.
The game won several awards before its release. It won the Start-Up Numix in 2016. It also won Best Music and Best Gameplay during the Montreal Indie Game Festival of 2017. Jeremy Parish (Polygon) wrote a feature article on the website saying “The Messenger stands apart from decades of Ninja Gaiden wannabes by presenting players with the tightest controls I've ever encountered in a game of this style". The game was presented to PAX South 2018 where several outlets praised the game as their best of show including Techraptor and Frank Howley
