Every dungeon in Ultima IX has a central gimmick and Hythloth is no exception. While you’d think that poison damage is what Hythloth specialises in, this is very quickly mitigated by the swamp boots you can find right at the beginning and the slew of cure potions scattered about. The true gimmick of the dungeon is the statue puzzle which is essential to our escape from this place. Most of the statues are hidden behind a puzzle of some kind and need to be placed on theirs respective pedestals to open locked gratings. You’ll know when you’re put the right statue on the right pedestal for the pedestal rises up along with some flashy lightning effects and the game showing you what your actions have accomplished.

You may remember that last video I put a statue on the pedestal accessible by riding the lift out of the swampy mire close to the swamp boots. |You may also remember that the pedestal didn’t rise up and there was no shiny lightning. This is because I put the wrong statue on that pedestal, an error that’s easier to make than you’d think with how similar the yellow pedestal and the green statue look in a gloomy sewer dungeon. Then there’s the matter of the other statues that we’re going to have to look for in a place that I’m sure to get lost in.

First things first though, we need the glyph of pride from the column that the wymguard was watching over. This is going to involve a small amount of swimming but fortunately the swamp boots somehow protect us from getting poisoned even when we swim in the mire. I’m going to justify it by them being magical and leave it at that.
