184As we’re still early on in the game, the second dungeon isn’t that much longer or difficult than the first, though it does have the added threat of needing to swim through water. The swimming mechanics are quite intuitive but nobody likes to see an oxygen bar slowly deplete before your eyes, making you more anxious the closer it gets to zero. I seem to recall that it running out makes it drain your health rather than killing you instantly but you’ll forgive me if I don’t go out of my way to test that out.
An rarely talked about downside of dungeon delving is that it’s difficult to keep track of the passage of time while you’re far underground battling monsters and solving puzzles. The Avatar did have a pocket watch which he entrusted to Shamino after Ultima VI but we wouldn’t be able to get it from him even if our companion did still have it. This can mean leaving a dungeon and finding that it’s the middle of the night and while this game doesn’t spawn any additional or tougher enemies in the night hours as far as I recall, it is a LOT harder to see when the only illumination is the stars overhead. It’s a good thing then that we have both a torch and a light spell to help us out, provided I remember to use them.
