ULTIMATE GENERAL CIVIL WAR, THE PC GAME
Ultimate General Civil War is a real time strategy (RTS) video game about the United States' Civil War of 1861-1865.
The player is commanding and managing an authentic army of either Union or Confederate soldiers of the 1860s including infantry, cavalry and artillery.
On the battlefield players can zoom out to a more strategic level and give strategic commands like general marching orders or general attack orders. Zoomed in, single units can be controlled and assigned specific orders. Depending on the competence of the commanding officer these commands are fulfilled more or less to the players satisfaction. Units whose officers have died suffer significant penalties due to the disruption of their command structure.
In army camp players can manage their army's organizational structure, allocate (looted or bought) weapons and assign replacements. There is also a reputation system. The more impressive the player's results on the battlefield, the higher his/her reputation as a general grows. This reputation can be used to increase a general's political, economic, logistical and military influence and expertise. In the end of the campaign a competent general can lead several divisions, corps and many brigades into battle. In army camp there is also a strategic level available where battlefields and thus the course of the campaign can be chosen.
The PC video game Ultimate General: Civil War was developed and published by indie sutdio Game Labs in 2018 (final version). The game is part of a series of American-war themed computer war games that focus on tactics and military history: the Ultimate General series. Civil War is the second title in this series. The first was Ultimate General: Gettysburg which was released in 2017. After Civil War Game-Labs released a new series of naval-based games called Ultimate Admiral. In 2019 they released Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sails and in 2020 Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts. Game Labs created a new perspective on the Total War games. That Ultimate General is like Total War would not credit it enough though.
ULTIMATE GENERAL CIVIL WAR, THE BACKGROUND
In 1861 the American Civil War broke out between the Union ("the North") and the Confederacy ("the South"). The Confederacy had been formed by states that had seceded from the Union. The central cause of the war (not a war goal at first) was a conflict over slavery. Slavery was legal in several States and there was a dispute whether it should be allowed in Western territories. This would have led to more slave states, while its mitigation was feared to ultimately lead to its extinction. When Abraham Lincoln, who was against slavery, became president of the United States of America, this conflict escalated, leading to the secession of seven southern slave states who became the Confederacy.
The American Civil War should rage on until 1865 and cost hundreds of thousands of lives. It became a precursor of modern warfare that saw massive artillery bombardments, prolonged sieges and trenches like in World War I. After some initial successes the Confederates succumbed to the greater industrial power and military numbers of the Northern states.

NEW HERE?
My callsign is Hardball, PlayingHardball. I’ve always loved gaming, particularly games as forms of art and ways to explore narratives in interactive ways. I have been playing video games nearly all my life, on the internet for a few years now. I enjoy a great variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (like Mass Effect, Disco Elysium, The Witcher, etc), strategy/tactical games (like XCOM, Panzercorps, Total War, Battlestar Galactica etc), and RPGs (like Baldur's Gate, Pathfinder etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!
