Let's play with the puzzle Tangrams! I was influenced by the drama "Bright Minds"! - MVlog 26
3Hello, I'm mbsupport. Today I would like to introduce a puzzle called a Tangrams. I first learned about tangrams when I watched the ninth episode of season one “La Mort et Compagnie” of the French-language drama “Bright Minds” which was broadcast on NHK General TV on September 25, 2022.
To quote Astrid's line in the drama, “Tangram is a Chinese puzzle that can be played by two people. The square is divided into seven pieces, which are used to make the same shape as the sample. Each time, all the pieces must be used, and the first one to make a shape wins.”
The game used in the drama is the ”Logic Tangram Set with Play Cards Wooden Puzzle Game” from ” Winshare Puzzles and Games”, which contains two sets of seven wooden pieces of tangrams. It contains two sets of seven wooden pieces of tangrams. I bought “Hanayama Katsuno Lucky Puzzle Tangrams” because I play alone. There are many kinds of tangrams sold in the market, so you need to check them out. It contains 7 pieces (made of beech wood), a case (made of MDF), a sleep case (made of PET), and a problem book (made of paper). The problem book contains 120 silhouettes (problems), 25 each for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, 25 alphabets, and 20 tangram paradoxes experienced by Raphael and Theo in the play. Solution diagrams are not provided and can be downloaded by accessing the manufacturer's website.
The video shows some of the silhouettes that Astrid and Rafael created in the scenes they enjoy in the play. The story referenced is Season 1, Episode 9, “La Mort et Compagnie”. I have only completed 12 of the beginner's level problems, but even in the beginner's level there were silhouettes that I had trouble with for about 15 minutes. Seeing a sample silhouette and making a shape with 7 pieces was more difficult than I thought it would be.
If you are not satisfied with the 120 problems in the included booklet, you can search for images of “Tangram Silhouettes” on the Internet, or purchase a book to play the game. The Logic Tangram Set with Play Cards Wooden Puzzle Game used in the drama also comes with a silhouette card booklet of 43 cards, but Astrid referred to an old book with a hidden cover.
In the drama, Astrid gives a “thimble” to Raphael, and I also received a “thimble” as a souvenir from a trip to France (maybe for work) several decades ago. However, I was told that it was purchased at “Mitsukoshi” (a Japanese department store) in France, so I am not sure if it was made in France. At the time, I thought, “Why ‘Mitsukoshi’ when I went all the way to France? I wondered (laughs). Another teacher gave me a “BOHIN” tape ”measure” as a souvenir from a trip to France. BOHIN” is a long-established French manufacturer, but the hardware on the tape measure was stamped ”GERMANY”. These items are also introduced in the latter half of this video.
