There is a bit of code in, I think its one of the Final Fantasy games, where the game detects if you've been going in a straight line for awhile and when it does, it either prevents random encounters completely or else vastly reduces the chance of them occurring. This is so that people focusing on getting through the plot can avoid random grinding if they don't want to deal with it.

This game is pretty much the exact opposite of that.
