This bit of story twist is a bit annoying to me. There was no hint or clue about it really. The first sign I had of what was going on came when Zerva popped into dialogue saying "we've figured out what really goes on here." I mean, the set-up is a common one and all, but there was absolutely no lead in to it. Feels like a very clumsily handled storytelling moment.
