I'll admit: I never played the first Hive Jump game, so I don't know anything about the story or universe, such as they may be. But what I can tell you: adding a jetpack to a survival-like game really changes up the dynamic. This game checks all of the survival-like games: meta progression, heaps of enemies, upgrades on wave completion/levelling up/task completion, a general sense of panic until you find a game-breaking combo. But the ability to jump out of the way of swarms of enemies adds a real dynamic to the game that I think needs to be explored more.
In any case this is all I've been playing on my off-time, so take that as the best recommendation that I can give.
