Let's Try Mabby (Demo)
2Here's my Let's Try of the demo of Mabby, a 2D action/puzzle platformer in-development by JoyPlay. This title takes a lot of inspiration from the Mega Man Classic games, but adds its own spin on level design and mechanics.
In this, you play as Mabby, a cheerful green blockhead exploring a strange and dangerous block world filled with many locales and inhabitants both friendly and not friendly. She has the ability to jump, shoot, crouch, and create up to two temporary blocks.
In this demo, there are only two levels to go through - Woodland Way (the tutorial stage), and Cuberd's House (the first stage where you can die). I would have liked a third level, but apparently the developer already neared the file size limit at Scirra's Arcade with the current number of levels. Oh well, at least this demo provides a good representation of the gameplay.
Overall, my time with this title was relatively positive. The controls and physics are positive. The aesthetics stand out from many other titles in this genre. And the gameplay holds a lot of promise. The core gameplay is simple, but there are a lot of ways it can be extended in later levels. I've seen a few in the trailer, and am looking forward to the final product in Summer 2017.
