Let's Try One Step From Eden (Alpha Demo)
Here's my Let's Try of the Alpha Demo (v106) of One Step From Eden, a Megaman Battle Network inspired deckbuilding roguelike game in-development by Thomas Moon Kang.
In this title, you play as a Saffron, a military experiment on a mission to reach Eden. Opposing her are hordes of monsters, machinery, and other characters. Thankfully, she has a small arsenal of spells at her disposal.
This game takes heavy inspiration from the MMBN combat system, and applies its own spin on it. Spells are similar to battle chips, but the way they are selected and used is different. Like with the battle chips, spells are picked at random from the deck. However, there are no chip codes to worry about, and the game doesn't pause mid-battle when selecting the next set of spells. The custom gauge is gone as well, replaced with a mana meter that recharges over time, and depleted by using spells. With this system, the player has to work on the fly with whatever spells they obtain and manage their mana usage as more powerful spells delete more mana. Thankfully, players may shuffle or "reload" the deck at any time to regenerate all spells (that aren't marked as "consumable"), but the shuffle duration increases every time. So, there's a lot of balancing and juggling around in this battle system.
If anything, this along with certain other changes, makes this battle system feel like a more frantic, faster-paced version of MMBN's. And I haven't even touched on the combo potential of certain spells, boss difficulty, and the apparently high skill ceiling.
So, I have great hopes for this project. I'm pleased with how this and End Cycle are adapting and extending the MMBN formula.
