This game is a bit more like standard boss fights in that the boss has a distinct pattern to its attacks and the secret to beating it lies in figuring out the way those patterns work. The cosmic cockroach in the fridge was similar to this. To be fair, a lot of the main story bosses have their own patterns as well, because that's how AI works, but it's a bit different. The patterns of this and the cockroach dominate the fight whereas the main story missions have their patterns, yes, but the secret is less learning and reacting to their patterns than it is to force your pattern on the fight.
