Unleashing the Power of Digital Twins for Efficient Urban Mobility Management in Berlin

Presented at EclipseCon 2023 in Ludwigsburg, Germany by Moritz Schweppenhäuser (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft), Robert Hilbrich (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR)) and Michael Behrisch (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR)).

Managing road traffic in metropolitan areas like Berlin is a significant challenge for stakeholders such as local authorities, city planners, and automotive and logistics providers. In this presentation, we will showcase the utilization of open-source tools, Eclipse SUMO and Eclipse MOSAIC, to enhance urban mobility management, offering substantial benefits for these stakeholders.
Efficiently analyzing and improving complex urban mobility systems is crucial for local authorities, ensuring smooth traffic flow and resident safety. City planners require effective tools to assess infrastructure changes and evaluate strategies for optimizing urban mobility. Automotive and logistics providers need insights into traffic patterns to enhance operations and delivery efficiency.
Integrating Eclipse SUMO and Eclipse MOSAIC provides a powerful solution. Digital Twins, constructed using these tools, offer a dynamic representation of urban environments, enabling stakeholders to explore improvement strategies. With Eclipse SUMO's simulation capabilities, accurate models of traffic flow, pedestrian dynamics, and multimodal transportation networks are created for scenario testing and optimization. Eclipse MOSAIC allows for the simulation and analysis of autonomous systems, facilitating the development of Smart Mobility Solutions.
Throughout the presentation, we will discuss the construction process of a Digital Twin using Eclipse SUMO and Eclipse MOSAIC, highlighting features catering to the needs of local authorities, city planners, and automotive and logistics providers. Emphasizing the value of these open-source tools in evaluating and visualizing urban mobility scenarios, stakeholders gain data-driven decision-making capabilities, enhancing road traffic management and optimizing infrastructure.
This presentation provides practical guidance on leveraging Eclipse SUMO and Eclipse MOSAIC to work with our publicly available Berlin SUMO Traffic Scenario (https://github.com/mosaic-addons/best-scenario) comprising of 2,25 million trips within an area of 800 km². We hope to empower stakeholders to drive positive change in metropolitan areas. By collaborating and utilizing these tools, local authorities, city planners, and automotive and logistics providers can work towards more efficient, sustainable, and livable cities like Berlin.
