From Fragmentation to Connection
The Role of a Chat Service in Building Bridges Across Communities, Projects, and Tools
Presented at EclipseCon 2023 in Ludwigsburg, Germany by Sébastien Heurtematte (Eclipse Foundation).
If you are used to working in multiple development communities, you understand how challenging it can be to find your way around quickly. In order to be as effective as possible and contribute rapidly without getting stuck by too many formal communication mechanisms (such as ticketing), the role of informal communication becomes important.
This is just one example among many others. Let's reintegrate chat platforms into our processes as a central tool for the success of open-source projects.
In this talk, I will present Matrix project: features, components, functioning, and implementation in the Eclipse Foundation's IT ecosystem.
Role and perspective provided by Matrix:
* Within a project/a team: it allows direct connections for team members and external contributors.
* With other communities: it facilitates the aggregation of skills, improves interactions, and offers better visibility on the liveliness of a community by providing quick and efficient responses.
* With Tools: by allowing interactions with CI/CD tools, management tools, IDEs, etc.
We will also talk about federation, and other amazing features like: bridges, app-services, bots, and SDK offered by the matrix community.
