Advanced Battle Tactics Tutorial ~ "Ability & Guard Cancels"
- I showed you ATB-Cancelling when FF13 is out, time to show you some new awesome tactics in FF13LR!
Canceling is when you interrupt the current animation or action into another animation. This is really common in fighting games. In here, this can be done too.
{ABILITY CANCEL}
All attacks when you preform the whole same continuous-attack, you will end in a "stylish" attack on the final hit. In this case when you cast:
- "Fira or Blizzara" 3x, you will end with a backflip casting on your third attack.
- "Fire/Blizzard/Aero/Thunder", on the 5th final cast of the continuous spell, you will backflip.
- "Blitz" will end on the third hit, doing a jump area attack as the ender.
- "Attack" will end on the fifth hit, doing a huge slash as the ender.
Knowing the limit amount when you cast it is important!
Canceling is easy, you just switch to a DIFFERENT spell instead of casting the 5th continuous of the same spell. So as you can see at the very beginning after I placed DeProtect:
Fira, Fira, Blizzara, Fira, Fira, Blizzara
Removing that "Backflip" saves you about 3 seconds or more, upkeeps the Frequency and allows you to cast more without any recovery time from the backflip because you ignore the final attack of that continuous same-spell combo.
Why use Blizzara instead of Blizzard or a low tier spell?
Because even though it would be cheaper on the ATB, Blizzara have a higher Frequency upkeep and output to allow me to Break the enemy, making it faster than using a Tier 1 version.
This leads to the next tactic afterwards "Guard Cancel".
{GUARD CANCEL}
Guard Cancel pretty much cancel all animation, so timing IS important as you can cancel your entire attack animation (hence wasting time, slowing down, and not attacking). BUT if you Guard Cancel at the end of your attack, you can remove the Recovery Time completely AND speed up your attack chaining to deal more damage.
As you can see I was Guard Cancel "Cross Slash".
Cross Slash have a HUGE recovery time, but with a sacrifice of 5-10 ATB per Guard Canceling, I can completely remove the Cross Slash recovery time (see my first two boss videos and you'll see the recovery time from Cross Slash) and able to chain nonstop!
Keep in mind that it DOES take 5-10 ATB per Guard Cancel but is the cost worth it?
Yes it is because if you have Brave or Faith active, every second counts, as you can see I took out the final メガップル (they are extinct in the game now, no more!) in under 30 seconds due to the Canceling as the buff only last for 30 seconds!
If I did this fight without Canceling, the buffs would've been gone due to all those recovery time (and the fight will last about 35 seconds to 1 minute, which is NOT enough for 5 stars, need to be about 23 seconds).
