Red Candle Games released their side-scrolling horror game, Detention, on January 12, 2017. Reception on platforms like Steam has been overwhelmingly positive, mirrored by critical reviews on sites like Metacritic.
Controls for the game (played here on a PC) are handled entirely with the mouse. Using LMB to click on the ground (to the left or right) moves the character. Hovering over an object (a door, piece of paper, etc.) interacts with it; the type of interaction is dependent on the icon displayed. RMB makes a character hold their breath (for stealth). Inventory is accessed by hovering the mouse cursor near the bottom of the screen. To use an item from inventory, click on it (the cursor will show an image of the item selected); then move the mouse cursor over an item in the game, and click on that item. If the item shown on the cursor is red, it cannot be used to interact.
Two students find themselves trapped at Greenwood high school, located in a remote mountainous area. Escape will require using objects and solving puzzles. Living under a fictitious, oppressive 1960s Taiwanese militaristic government, both Wei and Ray find secrets about possible atrocities . . . and the horrors these acts have likely unleashed. Will they escape the school and survive the typhoon holding them there? Let's play Detention and hope for the best.
