Released on February 14, 2012, Dear Esther is a redevelopment of the once free-to-play modification of the Source gaming engine. This game created by The Chinese Room has been reworked for this Landmark Edition using the Unity gaming engine, with remastered audio and an option for developer commentary added. The game has generally received high to very high scores from critics and players alike, most often having the music and the general atmosphere cited for their quality.
The game is literally a walking simulator, where interaction with the environment is rare. Most of the time, the player wanders into a specific area to trigger additional notes or dialogue from the main characters. As such, W, A, S, and D are practically the only controls (the latter two strafing, rather than turning), with only LMB being used for the occasional interaction. A flashlight automatically turns on when entering a darker place.
A man, worn and weary from life, begins his final journey. As he travels, he speaks to his deceased wife, as if through a series of letters. As he travels, he also becomes increasingly weaker, so that by the end of the journey, continuing is a struggle. Why does he come to this island? What does he hope to find? Will he ever find rest? Let's play Dear Esther and see.
