Lithuania is a country in Northern Europe, one of the three Baltic States along with Latvia and Estonia. It borders Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and Russia’s Kaliningrad region to the southwest. To the west, it has a coastline along the Baltic Sea.
Vilnius is the capital and largest city. Lithuania has a population of around 2.8 million people. The official language is Lithuanian, one of the oldest surviving Indo-European languages still in use today.
Historically, Lithuania was once part of a powerful state—the Grand Duchy of Lithuania—that stretched across much of Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages. Later, it formed a union with Poland, and eventually came under Russian and then Soviet control. It regained full independence in 1990, becoming the first Soviet republic to declare independence.
Today, Lithuania is a democratic republic, a member of the European Union, NATO, and the Schengen Area. It has a mixed-market economy, strong cultural heritage, and a growing tech sector.
