Little Big Planet 3 - Andar's Judgment
Little Big Planet is a series of 2.5-d platformers which emphasize level creation, exploration, and community. The first two games by Media Molecule were absolutely fantastic, but the versions on the PSP and Vita are regarded as less so with blame being pointed towards outsourced development. So when Sony shows off Little Big Planet 3 without the men and women who created the first two, what are we mere mortals expected to think? Well, regardless of what we thought, Sumo digital has proven themselves as more than just a B-Team. Little Big Planet 3 manages to make massive improvements to the series while keeping in sync with what had come before.
What had come before was a brilliant formula of exploring a story mode to unlock materials while informing the player of the possibilities that the games creation tools would allow. Here, the games story revolves around the troubled Newton who seeks to be the best creator in the entire world, but doesn’t want to do the work to get there and seeks the help of evil Titans who had been locked away in a can of Earl Grey Tea. Once unleashed, the Titans corrupt Newton and set about destroying everything! Sackthing can’t stop the Titan’s alone and must awaken three guardians to assist him/her. These three guardians are the three major new additions to Little Big Planet. They each have their own unique characteristics which add variety to the platforming while also improving the gameplay for those who disliked the floaty jumping of Sackthing. There exists Oddsock who runs quickly, jumps precisely, and propels off of walls. There is Toggle, who can be really big, slow, and most importantly heavy, but can also be small, quick, and most importantly light. This allows for momentum based levels and hidden spaces for the thing to squeeze through. Lastly, there is Swoop. He is a bird. He can fly. He can swoop. ‘Nuff said.
