Kingdom Hearts is a 2002 action role-playing game (RPG) developed and published by Square Enix in collaboration with Disney. It combines characters and settings from Disney animated films and Square Enix's Final Fantasy series with original characters and worlds. The game follows Sora, a 14-year-old boy who wields a Keyblade and travels to Disney worlds with his friends Donald Duck and Goofy to stop the Heartless from invading and restoring peace:
The game begins with Sora, Riku, and Kairi living on Destiny Islands and preparing to leave to explore new worlds. However, a storm separates Sora from his friends and destroys their home, scattering them to unknown worlds. Sora eventually finds Riku, but Riku disappears into the darkness, and the islands are attacked by Heartless, shadow creatures that seek to consume the world's heart. Sora tries to fight the Heartless but is unsuccessful until a Keyblade appears in his hand. Keyblades are metaphorical keys that can destroy darkness and repair worlds, and Sora uses his to seal each world's keyhole and stop the Heartless invasion.
The game also features a substantial action and hack and slash element, and the score was composed by Yoko Shimomura
