18I'm playing Half-Life for the first time — a classic 1998 first-person shooter developed by Valve Corporation and published by Sierra Studios for Microsoft Windows. This was Valve's debut game and the first entry in the now-iconic Half-Life series.
Half-Life: Opposing Force is a thrilling expansion to the iconic first-person shooter Half-Life, released for Windows on November 19, 1999. Developed by Gearbox Software and published by Sierra On-Line, this was the very first expansion to the original game—and it brought a fresh new perspective to the world of Black Mesa.
Instead of playing as Gordon Freeman, this time you're put in the boots of U.S. Marine Adrian Shephard, a member of the elite Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU). Originally sent to contain the chaos unleashed at Black Mesa after a scientific experiment goes horribly wrong, Shephard quickly discovers that the mission is far more complicated. Between hostile aliens and secretive black ops forces, the Marines are getting overwhelmed—and survival becomes the new objective.
The game was announced in April 1999, with Gearbox stepping in as the developer so that Valve could focus on their next big projects. Under the leadership of Randy Pitchford, Gearbox pulled together talent from across the gaming industry to elevate the design, making Opposing Force more than just an add-on—it became a beloved part of the Half-Life universe in its own right.
