Middle Earth Shadow of War is the best current Lord of the Rings game that is available and almost an amazing game. Sadly the decision to front load it with character breaking fan fiction and a free to play endgame grind built to nudge people in the direction of the no longer available marketplace hurt this game immensely. If you can get past the butchery of the monster spider Shelob and the horrible grind in the final act of this game then there is plenty to enjoy. The nemesis system and the ability to enslave uruks and make your own private army is still the best part of this game. The stealth and combat is much the same as the first game but the skill tree has been tweaked and for the most part all the changes are for the better. Being able to change abilities from fire to poison or frost damage is great and on the harder difficulty almost a requirement when going to take on tough uruks who may have a weakness to one or the others. Several ability modifiers can be selected in this way to suit the current needs of the player. That said some choices shouldn't have to be made and the perfect example is the ability to regain arrows from draining enemies sharing the same slot as the ability to dominate them. In some areas of the game arrows are scarce and now the player is forced to stop dominating uruks to their side and instead have to pick the option that allows you to get arrows back for draining them. It's a meaningless choice because all the player has to do is hit the character menu and switch to arrows then hit the character menu and switch back to the dominate skill, all this choice ultimately does is waste the player time and there is quite enough of that going on already with the free to play endgame progression system that clearly was designed with the intention of selling a shit load of "time skips". All the bad aside I was personally happy with the purchase since it only cost me 19 bucks and is truly full of Lord of the Rings goodness. It's just a shame that all of the goodness takes a backseat to the horrible decisions made with Shelob and the microtransactions that even though have been removed their grindy and greedy shadow still remains. Here's hoping the next Lord of the Rings game we see will remove all the obviously poor decisions and focus on the good ones because goddamnit THERE WERE some good ones in here. Love, Jax & Chubbz
