Batman Returns, the Genesis version, is an action platformer, where as the SNES version is a beat 'em up (as of 2023 I haven't played the SNES version yet, but I might in the near future). I grew up with this version, and while I love the gritty dark vibes of the visuals, and the melancholic soundtrack, the game suffers a lot from other problems. First off, the game is HARD, and while the level designs seem intentional (the last level is the exception, being much harder than the rest of the game), the enemies are pretty unfair, so prepare for a slog if you wish to beat this game. The other problem, and may be the actual reason the rest of the game feels hard, is the controls. My god, the controls. The basic controls are fine, like attacking, using weapons, or jumping, but it's when you need to use multiple buttons in tight situations that you start to see the flaws of the controls, specifically the grappling hook. With practice, you can adapt to the controls, but you might quit out of frustration before that happens.
