Ecco the Dolphin was one of the popular titles for the Genesis in 1992, eventually becoming a franchise for SEGA. Ecco the Dolphin is infamous for it's difficulty, and having finally beat it after years of never getting past the City of Forever, I can say with confidence that, yes, it is a very hard game, probably the hardest Genesis game I've ever played, and I'm openly going to admit I needed to use cheats, so I guess technically I didn't beat it authentically, but this is likely as close as I'll ever get. Graphically it looks amazing, and the audio is definitely spooky... actually thinking about it, the game is kind of like a horror game unintentionally... and if you wanna go even deeper, read into the inspirations for the game, and you'll find that this game has probably the darkest backstory of any game in existence, it's pretty crazy. Got a little off topic there; the controls and level design ultimately are the reasons for the difficulty. The controls are bad, and I feel they were intentionally made this way to emulate being a dolphin moving in water, and I get it, but for most of the game I didn't feel like I had any control over Ecco. The level design is unforgiving, and I'm sure everyone who has played this can agree with me, especially the final level, my god. And the funny thing is... it's a game about a dolphin. Like who thought that this game was gonna be so insanely hard when they bought it? Who thought they were gonna be traumatized by it for the rest of their lives?
